MARCH BREAK NEWS

MARCH BREAK NEWS

A Sobering Reality

Every day – right here in our considered affluent community of Oakville – there are parents who struggle just trying to make ends meet. Their children are often excluded from experiences and opportunities that many kids today take for granted. Statistics Canada reports that single parents and their children are in an especially vulnerable position – a staggering 1 in 5 children live in poverty.

How Can We Help?

In an effort to seek out ways our team could help, we spoke with the kind and generous folks at Kerr Street Ministries who partner with Upward Sports, a Christian sports ministry who service 46 U.S. States and Canada. Not only does Upward Sports provide programs that focus on the fundamental skills of the sport while teaching the associated virtues that the kids/athletes can use in future life situations, they also equip local churches with everything needed to run their own leagues.

Kerr Ministries shared with us that in our community alone there were over 40 kids who were unable to go to camp for March Break. We knew immediately this was it – this is where we could help. Thank you to Kerr Ministries for facilitating the opportunity for us to light a candle in these children’s lives and help make their March Break something to remember.

Gratitude and Joy

After the kids returned from a week at camp we were delighted to host a pizza party so that we could meet them. It was exhilarating for us to see the children’s appreciation and happiness evoked by just this one small act of kindness. The roar of a great big group “Thank You!” filled the room at the end of the party and filled our hearts with joy!

KIDS HELP PHONE

KIDS HELP PHONE

On Sunday May 6th, 2018, BMO presented the “Walk so Kids Can Talk” event to celebrate Mental Health Week. It is the biggest annual fundraiser and single largest day of community action for the charity, Kids Help Phone. Last year more than 3.7 million dollars was raised and all of the money goes to insuring that Kids Help Phone can continue to provide crucial trusted counseling and support services to young people across Canada.

Since 1989, Kids Help Phone has offered kids and teens support through its non-judgmental, confidential, anonymous and free service. They have helped more than 7.1 million callers by sharing their perspectives and improving their emotional health and well-being. The majority of revenue for the Kids Help Phone comes from individuals, foundations, corporations and community fundraising.

This May 6th we were very proud to support our friend Lynn who enthusiastically participated in this years walk to raise awareness and funds so that any child in Canada who needs to talk about any problem they are dealing with – just needs to call or click, anytime 24/7/365.

Kids Help Phone has partnered with Crisis Text Line which brings a new and easy way for kids to access help directly from their cellphone without the need for a data plan, internet connection or app! Crisis Text Line is currently up and running in Manitoba and will be launched across Canada later this year.

SPRING HOME MAINTENANCE

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

GENERAL CLEANING

A good place to start is doing general house cleaning for the home. Aim to clean all the corners that are hard to reach or have been neglected. Cleaning will involve cleaning fixture like chandeliers, fans, sink and drains in the house. Wash all the drapes, windows, carpets and rugs.

CHECK ALARMS AND FILTERS

Check the heating and cooling system to confirm all the filters are in good condition. It’s also the perfect time to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms/detectors.

DE-CLUTTER

It is easy to accumulate things in the garage, basement and even in the closet. Take time to give away all unnecessary items and organize the home.

INSPECT THE ROOF

Inspect the roof to check for loose shingles and to see if water is accumulating on the roof.

CLEAN GUTTERS

Gutter and downspouts get clogged by debris. Clear gutters direct water from your home preventing water damage. It is imperative to unclog gutters and downspouts regularly, especially, if there are trees surrounding your home.

MAINTAIN THE LAWN AND BACKYARD

Lawns are the first thing that any visitor will see upon visiting you. Mow your lawn and trim the hedges, add some flowers and plants to spruce up the yard.

CHECK THE FOUNDATION

Check the basement wall from outside and inside to ensure there’s no water getting into your basement.

TAKE OUT THE BBQ GRILL

Spring is a time to have fun and entertain friends and family. Clean the grill and any outdoor furniture and prepare it for future use.

With winter finally on it’s way out, we’re more than ready to welcome spring! Use the checklist below to get you home ready for the warmer months, after a long winter.
